Abstract

The anatomy and histology of the ATRIOVENTRICULAR NODE was studied -in the HEART of six CAMELs (Came/us dromedarius). The ATRIOVENTRICULAR NODE was located in the lower posterior portion of the intertribal septum, anterior to the coronary. sinus and inferior to the oval fossa at the base of the septal cusp of the tricuspid valve. It was irregularly elliptical, measured 6. 38±1.41mm in length, 4.08±0.95 mm in width and 1.11±0.51 mm in thickness; its maximum sectional area was 16.34±2.94 mm2. Histologically, the node was surrounded by connective tissue and consisted of specialized myocardial fibers arranged in the fashion of peculiar, loose, grouping of irregularly whorled interlacing bundles. The cells showed faint cross-striation and lacked in glycogen. The myofibrils were less in number in each fibre.The ATRIOVENTRICULAR NODE was in close contact with the nerve fibres and parasympathetic ganglia. It was supplied by the ATRIOVENTRICULAR NODAL ARTERY of the right Proximal atrii ramus which is a branch of the right circumflexus ramus of the right coronary artery.
