AN EVALUATION OF DROUGHT TOLERANCE IN ADVANCED DURUM WHEAT GENOTYPES BASED ON PHYSIOLOGIC CHARACTERISTICS AND OTHER RELATED INDICES

Abstract

 Fourteen DURUM WHEAT genotypes selected from durum project of Dry land Agricultural Research Institute (DARI) were studied in two conditions (rainfed and supplemental irrigation regime) in 2003-04 cropping season in Dry land Agricultural Research Sub-Institute (DARSI), Kermanshah, Iran. The genotypes were evaluated for such PHYSIOLOGICAL TRAITS, as relative water content (RWC), relative water loss (RWL), chlorophyll flourescence (CHF), Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), Chlorophyll-b (Chl-b), proline content, relative injury (RI%), stress tolerance index (STI) and multiple selection index (MSI). Results showed significant differences among genotypes for most traits. The most and the least RWC belonged to genotypes 1 and 8, respectively. The most RI% was observed for the genotypes 10 and 11 and the least for genotype 3. Chl-a and chl-b Contents were the highest for genotype 3, and the lowest for genotype 2. Genotypes I, 3, 5 and 6 had high STI values. These genotypes had the better perfonnance for grain yield in either of the mentioned conditions (rainfed and supplemental irrigation regime). Regression analysis indicated that day to heading (DHE), RWC and RWL were determined as very effective in drought tolerance equation. BIPLOT, based on the first two principle components, showed that genotypes 1, 3, 4, 6, 11, and 13 had better performances.Performing cluster and discriminate analysis based on STI and MSI located genotypes 1, 3 and 6 in the same group. In total, and based upon results abtained from PHYSIOLOGICAL TRAITS and studied indices, genotypes 1, 3 and 6 could be suggested as drought tolerant genotypes.
