Abstract

The Primary aim of the present research has been to determine the extent of INTERNET ADDICTION among Tehran high school students and then explore its relationship with LONELINESS and SELF-ESTEEM. To do so, a sample of 1968 high school students in three different grades and in three areas of study from five different districts in Tehran were randomly selected. To collect data three measures were used: the IAT (Young, 1998). The UCLA LONELINESS Scale (Russell, 1996), and the SELF-ESTEEM Test (Rosenberg, 1965). Almost half of the sample was Internet users of whom 73 were identified as addicts (%3.8).Based on the demographic information, 37 at-risk users as well as the same number of regular users and non-users were matched and then compared with the addict group. This comparison showed that the addicts were significantly lonelier than both the regular users and non-users while their SELF-ESTEEM was significantly lower than that of the regular users.
