Abstract

Moses's response to God's question"و ما تلک بیمینک یا موسی "contains verbosity. This answer has remained an astonishing mystery to Islamic scholars for 14 centuries. They were unaware of this fact that there are two types of eloquence: (1) The eloquence used by the speaker, according to which, the utterance is appropriate for the hearer; (2) The eloquence used by the narrator, according to which each individual utterance is quoted as it has exactly occurred in the real world. Moses's response is devoid of eloquence, but its critique demonstrates the ultimate eloquence of the Holy Qur'ān.
