Abstract

The magical realism which is a style in fiction writing came to existence in the second half of the 20th century. Although this style is usually thought to be related to Latin America's literature, it is closely associated with surrealism and can be utilized in literature, art and in European stories as well as in the stories of the third world countries and in the literature of the second half of the 20th century and also of the centuries before. In Iranian literature, the magical realism has a striking representation in the gnostics' treatises, especially in Tadkirat al-Auliyā'.The present paper, after describing the magical realism and citing some of its examples, demonstrates that first, those who concern themselves with writing treatises, due to their prior experiences have utilized a style which is fully in accordance with the characteristics of the magical realism. Secondly, the attractiveness or the magical power of Taqkirat al-Auliyā', as has been claimed by some scholars, does not lie in its language, but is due to the combination of some elements from the real world with those of the magical world, i. e. the 'surrealistic or invisible world'.
