COMPARISON OF THE EFFECTS OF ANTIBIOTICS ON CLINICAL ENTEROCOCCI STRAINS IN PLANKTONIC AND BIOFILM FORMATION CONDITION, IN VITRO

Abstract

 Introduction: ENTEROCOCCI are the commensally organisms of gastrointestinal tract and frequently cause BIOFILM formation and infections. The purpose of the study was to compare the effects of the antibiotics ampicillin, gentamaicin, tetracycline and NITROFURANTOIN on enterococcal BIOFILMs through MIC, MBC and MBEC assays.Materials & Methods: In the present study 78 clinical samples were collected from Tehran hospitals. Identification of the isolated strains was based on the growth on Bilesculin agar culture, tolerance against 6.5% Nacl, gram staining, catalase test, hydrolysis of hyporate and fermentation of carbohydrates. Ten enterococcal isolates sensible to the antibiotics were selected for BIOFILM formation.Findings: Collectively, more sensibility to NITROFURANTOIN was seen in 93% of the isolates. The majority of cells in the BIOFILM were eradicated at the low levels of NITROFURANTOIN, namely, 256 mg/ml for one-day BIOFILM and 1024 mg/ml for five-day BIOFILM. The eradication of BIOFILMs was corroborated by electron microscopy observation.Discussion & Conclusion: The results demonstrated that NITROFURANTOIN could be efficiently used for the treatment of enterococcal infections in PLANKTONIC and BIOFILM condition.
