Abstract

 POLYLACTIDE (PLA) IS ONE OF THE MOST COMMONLY USED HYDROPHOBIC AND BIODEGRADABLE POLYESTERS WITH EXCELLENT BIOCOMPATIBILITY AND BIOABSORBABILITY IN VIVO THAT HAS BEEN INVESTIGATED IN TERMS OF VARIOUS BIOMEDICAL APPLICATIONS [1, 2]. HOWEVER PLA LACKS FUNCTIONAL GROUPS, MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO INTERACT AND TO BE MODIFIED WITH BIOLOGICALLY ACTIVE MOIETIES [3]. TO ACHIEVE THE FUNCTIONAL GROUPS, WE AIMED AT DEVELOPING AMPHIPHILIC BLOCK COPOLYMER CONTAINING A LINEAR PLA BLOCK AND A BRANCHED BLOCK BRINGING BOTH HYDROPHILICITY AND FUNCTIONAL GROUP ALONG THE BACKBONE FOR BIMOLECULAR COUPLING, NAMELY A POLY (CITRIC ACID) (PCA) BLOCK, BY MELT POLYCONDENSATION REACTION OF CITRIC ACID AND HYDROXYL TELECHELIC POLY (L- LACTIDE). CITRIC ACID WAS CHOSEN AS A MULTIFUNCTIONAL MONOMER TO HYDROPHILIC BLOCK FORMATION. THE STRATEGY FOR SYNTHESIZING PCA-PLA-PCA COPOLYMER IN THIS INVESTIGATION ALLOWS THE PREPARATION OF POLYMERIC MICELLE WHICH CAN BE USED AS A DRUG CARRIER.1H NMR IN DIFFERENT SOLVENTS (CDCL3, D6-DMSO AND D2O) PROVIDED EVIDENCE OF THE FORMATION OF MICELLES OF PCA-PLA-PCA COPOLYMER. DYNAMIC LIGHT SCATTERING (DLS) MEASUREMENTS SHOWED THE MEAN DIAMETERS OF 79 NM AND TRANSMISSION ELECTRON MICROSCOPY (TEM) SHOWED SPHERICAL PARTICLES WITH DIAMETERS OF 20 NM FOR POLYMERIC MICELLES OF PCA-PLA-PCA. THE PREPARED POLYMERIC MICELLES HAVE A LOW CRITICAL MICELLE CONCENTRATION (CMC) VALUE OF 1.99X10-3 MG/ML, WHICH SUGGESTS GOOD STABILITY OF THE NANOPARTICLES.
