Abstract

How to verify any relationship between initial value of a variable and its growth rate is a historical question. Robert Gibrat (1931) found a lognormal distribution for firms' size which was independent of their growth. Since 1990s, GIBRAT'S LAW has been considered applicable in urban studies to specify whether or not CITY SIZE has lognormal distribution (mostly verified). This study, using truncated data of 311 cities during 1355-85 and 30 provinces during 1375-85, estimated the relation between CITY SIZE and city growth. The results show that GIBRAT'S LAW is not confirmed with urban data so small cities having high growth rates converge towards large cities, with reasonable pace.
