Abstract

Introduction: One of the problems in disaster management is MASS CASUALTY INCIDENT (MCI). Red Crescent is one of the most important organizations during and after accidents.The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of education of MCI on KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDE, PRACTICE and SATISFACTION of Red Crescent Rescuers in Hamadan.Methods: First, Red Crescent officials of Hamadan were interviewed. According to their views, MCI, as the most important challenge, was considered. This was a semi-experimental single group study and data gathering tools included questionnaires (consisted of three sections of personal characteristics, determination of KNOWLEDGE and ATTITUDE) and check-lists for assessing PRACTICE. Content validity was used to determine the tools validity.Test-retest, Cronbach’s Alpha (0.92), inter-rater methods and simultaneous observation of two observers were used to determine scientific reliability of questionnaires and checklist, respectively. The study population comprised of all rescuers of Red Crescent. Available or purposeful sampling was done and 40 individuals participated in this study. KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDEs and PRACTICE were assessed before and after the workshop. Data were statistically analyzed by the SPSS software version 15 and paired t test.Results: All participants in this study were single males, (50%) in the age group of 18 to 23 years (50%) with bachelor's degree (75%). Average score of KNOWLEDGE before education was 5.4 ± 0.4 and after education this was 11.2 ± 1.3; average score of ATTITUDE before education was 6.1 ± 0.6 and after education this was 21.2 ± 3.5, and average score of PRACTICE before education was 2.5 ± 0.3 and after education this was 7.2 ± 0.5. Average SATISFACTION with the workshop was 52.6 ± 5.6 (P>0.001).Conclusions: Since KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDE and PRACTICE of rescuers increased after TRAINING thus this study recommends it to be used in other fields.
