Abstract

Individuals compete for dignity and it is manifested with many mechanisms like the use of certain goods and symbols. Consumption in cultural atmosphere is highlighted and provokes more and more consumption. Parties are considered as a dominant area of ostentatious consumption for earning identity and social pride. This research is a contextual exploration of how consumption and Keeping up with the Joneses are formed in Mashhad parties. In a qualitative approach and using grounded theory, a number of middle-class and upper middle class married women were interviewed using deep-seated interviews and purposeful and theoretical sampling. Data analysis was done in an open, axial and selective coding manner. The findings consisted of 18 main categories and a core category entitled Duality of Consumption and Honor. Conceptual tables, paradigmatic model and theoretical schema of the research were presented. The research results in general indicated that women at parties that are idiosyncratic to specific female management seek to represent their neglected identities. To this end and for retrieving their neglected identities, they are strongly dependent on others who are normative to represent their neglected identities. In this course of Dialectic Dependency is that women retrieve their neglected identities and parties turn into continuous processes.
