INVESTIGATION OF VOLTAGE PHASE SHIFT EFFECT ON MICROFLUIDIC ELECTROOSMOTIC MIXER

Abstract

 THIS PAPER IS FOCUSED ON ELECTROOSMETIC MICROMIXER AND THE EFFECTS OF APPLIED VOLTAGE ARE STUDIED IN THE SENSE OF MULTI-ELECTRODE CONFIGURATION WITH DIFFERENT PHASE SHIFT SCHEMES. TWO PAIRS OF ELECTRODES ARE MOUNTED ON THE SIDE WALLS OF MIXING CHANNEL TO PROVIDE THE REQUIRED ELECTRIC FIELD. VARIOUS NUMERICAL SIMULATIONS ARE PERFORMED TO ASSESS THE FLUID FLOW IN THE PRESENCE OF THE ELECTRO KINETIC DRIVING FORCE. THROUGHOUT THE SIMULATION, AMPLITUDE OF THE APPLIED FIELD IS KEPT CONSTANT WHILE THE PHASE OF FACING ELECTRODES IS SWEPT WITHIN 0 TO 180 DEGREE. RESULTS ARE EXTRACTED IN TERMS OF MIXING EFFICIENCY FOR STEADY AND TRANSIENT STATE. IT IS PROVED THAT THE PHASE SHIFT HAS SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON THE PERFORMANCE OF MICROMIXER DUE TO THE CORRESPONDING CHANGE IN EFFECTIVE ELECTRIC FIELD DISTRIBUTION ALONG THE MIXING CHAMBER. MAXIMUM MIXING EFFICIENCY OF 80% IS ACHIEVED AT 180 DEGREE VOLTAGE PHASE SHIFT AND ELECTRIC FIELD OF 5.3 ´ 104 V/M ON THE ELECTRODES SURFACE.
