Abstract

Introduction and aim: As medical and paramedical STUDENTS will play a very critical in the health of the society, it is important to know the problems that may affect the mental health of them. Considering the importance of this subject, the present study was done to investigate the GENERAL HEALTH of the newcomer STUDENTS (2002-2003) in medical sciences university of Birjand. Material and Methods: The mental health of all the new comer STUDENTS was investigated in a descriptive analytic study. All STUDENTS competed a self-administered questionnaire. The GENERAL HEALTH questionnaire (GHQ-28) has used for screening of the non-psychotic psychological disorders. In addition, the questionnaire was included questions about individual characteristics, and mental occupations.Results: From 300 STUDENTS, 287 competed the questionnaire. The findings indicated that; fear of speaking in front of audiences, lack of self-stem, difficulty in concentration, divorce & separation of parents, family argument & fight & the student's disease were among the factors which occupy their minds.Beside Based on the cut-point 23 as cut point, 8.6% of the whole newcomer STUDENTS were suspected of psychological disorder and based on the cut-point 6, in each subcategories of the test it was found that the STUDENTS suffered from disorder in social function anxiety, hypochondria and depression. From the viewpoint of psychological disorder, there were no significant difference between male and female STUDENTS, department of study, parent's education, kind of supervisor and economical problems. Only, there was meaningful relation between anxiety and economical problems.Conclusion: Considering the critical relations between economical problems and anxiety, it is requisite important to evaluate and help to resolve the problems of STUDENTS during university courses. In addition paying attention to such problems like fear of speaking between the STUDENTS is necessary.
