Title

CORRELATION BETWEEN BODY MASS INDEX AND BLOOD PRESSURE IN 7-11 OLD CHILDREN IN BIRJAND

Pages

  39-41

Abstract

Introduction and aim: Several studies in CHILDREN have consistently shown a strong relationship between blood pressure (BP) and BODY MASS INDEX (BMI). Several studies have shown that BP is higher and weight and height are lower than standard in Iranian CHILDREN. This study was done to evaluate the correlation between SYSTOLIC BLOOD PRESSURE (SBP) and DIASTOLIC BLOOD PRESSURE (DBP) with BMI in Iranian CHILDREN.Material and methods: By a systematic and cluster sampling in Birjand primary schools, 1760 students were selected. Weight and height are measured and mean of three measurements for blood pressure in right hand was recorded. Results: 1760 students of primary schools including 925 boys and 835 girls were studied. 1680 persons (95.5%) were none-obese and 80 persons (4.5%) were obese. 1618 persons (91.9%) had normal BP and 142 persons (8.1%) had high BP and 113 persons among 142 them (79.6%) were none obese, and 29 persons (20.4%) were obese. The prevalence of high BP in none obese group was 6.7% and in obese group was 36.3%. The relation between obesity and high BP was significant. In all persons and in both sexes the relation of SBP and DBP with BMI was positive and significant. SBP in 7-11 old age groups and DBP in 9, 10 and 11 old age groups had significant relation with BMI (P<0.000).Conclusion: Considering the relationship of high blood pressure and obesity, it is recommended to have nutritional and health care programs for preventing obesity and its subsequent high blood pressure.
