Abstract

Introduction and aim: BLOOD TRANSFUSION is a unique clinical approach. Nurses play an important role in the safe application of blood and blood products. This study was out for rating NURSES' KNOWLEDGE AND PRACTICE of BLOOD TRANSFUSION.Material and methods: In the present descriptive study, out of 126 nurses at work in departments of Interior Medicine, Surgery, Gynecology, Emergency Medicine, Intensive Cares and Pediatrics in Birjand hospitals for training, 104 interested in the research were chosen. Data gathering was done by questionnaire. Having been coded, the data related to NURSES' KNOWLEDGE AND PRACTICE was rated at three levels of weak, intermediate and good in terms of the scores obtained. Data analysis was conducted using Chi-square, Wilcoxon's Marked Ranks, and Kendal's Coordination Coefficient.Results: Majority of responders were female (84.6%) and had age of 20-30 years old and graduate nurses (59.6%). 51% of nurses were employed for less than 3 years. The mean score of knowledge was 16.52±5.3. In this connection, 47.1% of the samples got the 'weak' grade, and 4.8% gained a good score. The mean score for practice was 81.1±17.8. 21.2% of the samples had 'weak' and 19.2% good score. There was significant correlation between the NURSES' KNOWLEDGE AND PRACTICE (P=0.000). Regarding knowledge and practice and its relation with nurses' individual characteristics, there was just a meaningful relationship between knowledge and the department of nurses (X2=19.9 P=0.01).Conclusion: It seems that there is inadequate NURSES' KNOWLEDGE AND PRACTICE of BLOOD TRANSFUSION which raises the necessity of implementing retraining programs, of more activity on the part of the Committee for BLOOD TRANSFUSION, and of exerting more control measures in this field.
