Abstract

Introduction and aim: Due to special nutritional needs of children for growth, they are at significant risk of malnutrition. This is even more important and seen in areas with low socioeconomic status and health care. The purpose of this study was evaluation of nutrition states of PRIMARY SCHOOL CHILDREN in Birjand.Material and methods: The height and weight of 2327 students of 6-12 years old (1218 boys and 1109 girls), which were chosen through tow stage sampling (cluster and systematic), were measured. Nutritional status of children was measured by criteria of weight-for-age (Gom's), weight-for-height (Waterlow) and height-for-age (Waterlow). The relation of these indices with economic status, number of children and education of parents and mothers' employment was measured. The NCHS table was chosen as reference. Data analysis done by chi-square test with 95% confidential level and P<0.05 considered significant.Results: 73.7% of children (77.3% boys and 69.5% girls) were underweight. 36.5% of children (%44.3 boys and %27 girls) were suffered from WASTING and 48.6% of children (%43.8 boys and %53.7 girls) suffered from stunting. Underweight and WASTING was more common among boys and stunting was more common among girls (p<0.005) majority of malnutrition cases were of mild type, but sever malnutrition was less common. Malnutrition in PRIMARY SCHOOL CHILDREN in Birjand is very common. There was significant association of malnutrition in children with the number of family member, parents' educational level and family economic situation (p<0.005).Conclusion: With regard to the increased prevalence of children's malnutrition in Birjand and the role of socio economic factors in children's malnutrition, there is no doubt that improvement in clitoral and socio economic state and family planning can play an effective role in reducing malnutrition.
