Title

COMPARISON OF LIDOCAINE-SALINE AND LIDOCAINE- VERAPAMIL IN ATTENUATION OF CARDIOVASCULAR RESPONSES DURING EXTUBATION FOLLOWING GENERAL ANESTHESIA

Pages

  9-15

Abstract

Background: EXTUBATION was reported to be associated with cardiovascular complications. In the present study we have compared these complications in a group of patients undergoing general anesthesia for which EXTUBATION was indicated.Materials and methods: Seventy-two patients, aged 20-40 years, were enrolled for this double blind clinical trial. They were matched according to the age, sex, weight, and duration and type of anesthesia. They were assigned randomly in any of the 3 groups: LIDOCAINE + saline, LIDOCAINE + VERAPAMIl, and saline, (control), each included 24. Then, drug effects on systolic and diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, and heart rate x systolic blood pressure index were determined. Finally results were analyzed. Results: Systolic and diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, and heart rate x systolic blood pressure index were all significantly higher in the control group (p<0.05), however, these were not significantly differed between the two test groups. No drug side effect was reported in groups. Conclusion: Simultaous administration of LIDOCAINE and VERAPAMIl prevent from blood pressure and heart rate alterations. Similar studies with greater sample size are highly recommended.
