HISTOMORPHOLOGICAL AND HISTOMETRICAL STUDIES OF THYROID GLAND IN YELLOW SEABREAM (ACANTHOPAGRUS LATUS) OF PERSIAN GOLF IN WARM SEASON

Abstract

 This study was conducted on 20 sexually mature YELLOW SEABREAM (Acanthopagrus latus). For microscopical study, samples were taken from pharyngeal region and were fixed in Bouin's solution.5-6m sections were made by embedding paraffin method and stained by H&E and PAS. In order to histometerical study, the number of active and inactive thyroid follicles, vacuolated and non-vacuolated follicles and the height of folliclular epithelium were measured. The result showed that the THYROID GLAND of YELLOW SEABREAM is not a distinct organ and the thyroid follicles were scattered in the ventral region of pharyngeal connective tissue along with ventral aorta. Most of the follicles consisted of simple squamous epithelium. The percentage of active follicles and the height of their epithelium were 43/6% and 5.57 ± 0.11 mm, respectively. Analysis of THYROID HORMONES level using RIA (Radioimmuneassay) showed a significant increasing of T3 level in ratio to T4 level, which indicates deiodinase enzyme effect on converting of T4 to active thyroid hormone (T3) in WARM SEASON.
