Title

IRAN AND AFGHANISTAN DISPUTE OVER THE CHEKAB PROPERTY (1931-1934)

Pages

  56-74

Abstract

Purpose: The ownership of Chekab from earlier times and its importance for both parties is discussed. The dispute from the very beginning to the end is then fully reported. Finally, the paper comments on the consequences which Reza Shah’s decision to give up the claim had on the relationship with neighboring countries.Method/Research Design: Data was collected from archival documents and library sources.Findings and Results: Chekab had traditionally belonged to Amir Muhammad Ebrahim Alam, a subject of IRAN. Findings show that although at first there was much interest on the IRANian side to keep the property, the government later gave up its claim and agreed to transfer Chekab to AFGHANISTAN. The government of AFGHANISTAN purchased the property at a low price from the owner, Amir Ebrahim 'Alam. This was well before the Turkish arbitrator, Fakhr al-Din Altay's entered into the matter. The decision to surrender Chekab to the Afghans was an example of Reza Shah’s foreign policy to preserve good relations with neighboring countries. Amir Muhammad ‘Alam’s endeavors' to protect his property is praiseworthy from the national point of view of territorial integrity. Given his influence in the region, it seems possible that with the support of the government, he could have prevented Chekab from being separated from IRAN.
