Abstract:

Introduction: Serum Low-Density-Lipoprotein Cholesterol has long been used as an important assessment tool to predict the risk of coronary artery diseases, but due to certain limitations in the use of this index, it has been shown recently that Apo lipoprotein B is a better screening tool. Non- HDL Cholesterol (total Cholesterol minus HDL-C) includes all the lipoprotein particles, which' contain Apo lipoprotein B, and could be a good screening tool for Apo lipoprotein B during CAD assessment and treatment. This study aims at assessing the distribution and correlation of non- HDL-C and related factors in a population of Tehranian children and adolescents. Materials and Methods: The study sample consisted of 4298, 3-19 year-olds, (2019 boys (47%) and 2279 girls (53%)) who had participated in the first phase of the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (TLGS), from 1998-2000. Anthropometric and clinical data were collected for analysis. Results: Non-HDL-C levels were higher in girls than in boys of the same age groups, especially among the younger (3-4 year-olds) age groups. Body mass index and waist circumference were positively associated with non-HDL-C. Both non-HDL-C and LDL-C were strongly associated with each other and total Cholesterol (r2=0.81 and p< 0.001). Non-HDL-C and LDL-Care were associated with triglycerides, but the strength of this correlation with triglycerides was relatively weaker as compared to that with total Cholesterol. Non-HDL-C showed a significant inverse relationship to HDL-C (r2=0.01, p< 0.01). It was also seen that non-HDL-C had a stronger correlation to BMI and body fatness indicies. Conclusion: Population based data on non-HDL-Care now available for children and adolescents, which may help improve the CAD risk assessment and related interventions.

Abstract:

Cholesterol and particularly LDL-c is one of the most important risk factors of cardiovascular disease. The most important environmental factor that influence this anomaly is nutritional status. The aim of this Cross-Sectional study was determination of the level of serum Cholesterol and its association with fats and Cholesterol intake. We selected 628 men and women aged 35-65 years old in Tehran. The results indicated that, the level of total Cholesterol and LDL-c in 59% of the population was less than 200 and 130 mg/dl respectively. The level of HDL- c in 63.6% of women and 81.9% of men was below 40 mg/dl, so that the LDL- c/HDL- c ratio which is a predictor of cardiovascular disease increased. The nutritional status indicated that more than 50% of the population consumed daily, more than 75 gr. of total fats, which 2/3 of this fat constituted from saturated fats. The Cholesterol intake in 90% of the population was less than 300 mg/day. We observed no significant association between serum lipids and fats and Cholesterol intake. We concluded that less than 10% of the population suffers from hyperCholesterolemia, but the decrease of HDL-c is remarkable and can be considered as an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease in Iranian population.

Abstract:

To study the concentration of thyroid hormones (T3, T4) and serum lipids and lipoproteins of apparently healthy horses in different breeds and to find a possible relationship between the concentrations of thyroid hormones and lipids and lipoproteins the present study was carried out on 50 horses including 15 Dareshoori, 15 Arab, and 20 mixed breeds (foreign, Kurdish and Turkmen). These horses were divided in two age categories including 26 adults and 24 under three years old. Based on the results, significant differences were observed in the concentration of triiodothyronine between horses with a body score higher than 7 and less. Based on this result, it can be pointed out that the horses studied in this study with lower body scores have higher levels of serum triiodothyronine. Also, there was a significant difference in the concentration of serum thyroxine hormone in horses at different ages, which could indicate the effect of age on the concentration of thyroid hormones in horses. Among other breeds, there was a significant difference in the serum LDL concentration and means the difference in LDL levels in other breeds; Significant correlations between total Cholesterol and triglyceride (r=0.600), total Cholesterol and LDL (r=0.853), total Cholesterol and VLDL (r=0.600), triglyceride and LDL (r=0.521), triglyceride and VLDL (r=1.000) LDL and VLDL (r=0.521), triiodothyronine and thyroxine (r=0.599) were observed. No significant correlation was observed between the concentrations of thyroid hormones and serum lipids and lipoproteins of the studied horses.
