Abstract:

Background: Each country’s health system is tasked with providing services to ensure the health of its population. Dental services are among these essential services. However, dental service utilization is unevenly distributed worldwide. This study’s findings will give health sector officials and policymakers valuable insights to enhance system performance. Methods: This descriptive-analytical study, conducted in 2021, aimed to determine the distribution of DENTISTs worldwide. The analysis utilized the Pareto curve, the DENTIST-to-population ratio (DPR), the Gini Coefficient (GC), and the Lorenz curve. The goal was to identify the countries with the highest number of DENTISTs.Results: There are over 2,500,000 DENTISTs globally, averaging 3.6 DENTISTs per 10,000 people. However, the ratios vary significantly, with about 6.8 per 10,000 in countries with very high Human Development Index (HDI) groups and 0.19 per 10,000 in low HDI groups. The data indicates that more than 80% of DENTISTs work in countries with very high and high HDI.Conclusion: This study suggests that job concentration is higher in areas with superior welfare and facilities, and DENTISTry is no exception. Therefore, creating better welfare in more disadvantaged areas, implementing mandatory government plans, and strategic government planning can help mitigate distribution inequality.

Abstract:

DENTISTs and oral healthcare providers have a unique opportunity to motivate and help their patients to stop using different types of tobacco. There are many evidences that they can have a principle rule in prevention and treatment of many tobacco related oral and systemic diseases and repeated nature of dental services and relatively prolonged chair time provide multiple chances for informing, advancing and assisting patients in tobacco Cessation. On the other hand, it seams that they lack enough education in this area, leading to not adhering to this professional practice. This review provides a comprehensive discussion about the new published approaches for DENTISTs' intervention in tobacco cessation programs.

Abstract:

Background: To establish a good and effective relationship between a doctor and his/her patient, certain nonverbal standards are as necessary as knowledge and skills. According to evidence, one of these standards may be the DENTIST’, s attire. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the effect of dental students’,dressing on patients’, trust and confidence. Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study was performed to evaluate the perception of dental school patients. After reviewing pictures of dental students in six different dress styles, the respondents were asked some questions on their preference for dental students’,attire, as well as several questions targeting patients’,trust and confidence. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 16. Results: In the present study, 169 respondents with a mean age of 27. 5 years old were enrolled, including 47% men and 53% women. The included respondents significantly favored male DENTISTs with a long white coat and surgical scrubs and preferred a long white coat with a white scarf for women (P < 0. 001). They believed that DENTISTs with this attire are more knowledgeable, skilled, and professionally competent, and they were more appealing to share their personal issues with this kind of DENTIST. Conclusions: The respondents preferred dental students in professional attire. Wearing professional dress (a white coat) could have a favorable effect on patients’,trust and confidence.

Abstract:

Backgrond: The lack of information on the knowledge and attitude of DENTISTs towards herpes simplex virus is one of the concerns of the community. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 400 DENTISTs using continuous referral sampling technique. The questionnaire used to collect data included three sections: there were some questions on individual characteristics, 12 questions on DENTISTs’,knowledge about Herpes simplex infection, and 12 questions on DENTISTs’,attitudes towards this infection. In the section on knowledge, each question received a score of 1. The score range of each attitude question was 0-3. Data were analyzed running chi-squared regression analysis in SPSS, version 11. Results: Of 400 DENTISTs evaluated, 48. 25% were female and 51. 75% were male, with a mean age of 30 years. Knowledge was not very good in any of the samples, it was 3. 5% good, low in 3. 1%, and very low in 96. 3%. As for the attitude towards herpes simplex infection, 30. 3% had positive attitude, 58. 2% had a relatively positive attitude, and 11. 5% had a negative attitude. According to the results, there was a significant relationship between the lower age, education, university, and the province of activity (p < 0/05). Furthermore, female gender, age above 30, year of education prior to 2011, and graduates of Azad and Shahed University revealed positive awareness about herpes simplex infection (p < 0/05). Conclusion: The knowledge and attitudes of DENTISTs studied were lower than the expected levels. Thus, it is necessary to design proper educational programs to improve DENTISTs’,knowledge and attitudes on Herpes simplex infection.

Abstract:

INTRODUCTION: Diseases of the dental pulp and periapical tissues are chiefly caused by microorganisms. Antibiotics are used in some endodontic cases; however, successful cases can predominantly be achieved by mechanical and chemical cleaning of the canal or surgical intervention.MATERIALS & METHODS: The aim of this study was to determine the knowledge of General Dental Practitioners (GDPs) in Shiraz in respect to antibiotic prescriptions during and after endodontic treatment. A one-page questionnaire was sent to 200 active general DENTISTs. Of the 120 surveys returned, 93 were accepted. The data were analyzed using t-test, Chi-square, ANOVA and Fisher’s Exact Test.RESULTS: Only 29% of DENTISTs had full knowledge (correct answers to all questions) of antibiotic prescription protocols in pulpal and periapical disease. Amoxicillin 500 mg capsule was the drug of choice of DENTISTs. Total of 42% of GDPs had full knowledge of antibiotic prescription protocols for persistent or systemic infections cases. GDPs more recently qualified had slightly greater knowledge compared to GDPs with experience; however, this difference was not significant. Also, there was no significant difference between genders.CONCLUSION: General practitioners’ knowledge about antibiotics seems inadequate and further education is recommended to update the practitioners.

Abstract:

Bone marrow transplant (BMT) has increasingly become a common treatment option for patients whom has their bone marrow affected directly or indirectly by any disease. Because of the level of immunosuppression achieved in BMT, any problems the pediatric patient presents in their oral cavity can become life- threatening and increase the length of hospital stay, the patients discomfort and the treatment cost. This paper discusses the important and unique role that pediatric DENTISTry has in the multi professional bone marrow transplantation team to help bring out a successful outcome through the prevention and treatment of the acute oral complications often seen in these patients.
