BACKGROUND AND AIM: QUORUM SENSING (QS) IS A CELL TO CELL SIGNALING MECHANISM IN WHICH BACTERIA REGULATE THE EXPRESSION OF CERTAIN GENES IN RESPONSE TO THEIR POPULATION DENSITY BY PRODUCING, RELEASING AND DETECTING DIFFUSIBLE SIGNAL MOLECULES. THIS SYSTEM IS USED TO REGULATE DIVERSE MICROBIAL BEHAVIOR, INCLUDING MOTILITY AND BIOFILM FORMATION, VIRULENCE, MOTILITY, AND ANTIBIOTIC PRODUCTION. GRAM NEGATIVE BACTERIA LIKE PectobacteriumBETAVASCULORUM PRODUCE NACYLHOMOSERIN LACTONE (N-AHL) AS THEIR SIGNALING MOLECULE. IN THESE BACTERIA, AHLS REGULATE VIRULENCE GENE EXPRESSION OF DIFFERENT GENES INCLUDING GENES CODING FOR MOTILITY, TOXINS AND CELL WALL DEGRADING ENZYMES.
