Abstract:

The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between perfectionism and anger in a sample of students. A correlational analysis was performed to assess the kind of association existing among three dimensions of perfectionism including self-oriented, other-oriented, and socially prescribed perfectionism with anger dimensions including trait-anger, state-anger, anger-in, anger-out, anger-control in, and anger-control out. A total of 242 students (142 girls, 100 boys) were included in this study. All participants were asked to complete the Tehran Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (TMPS) and the Tehran Multidimensional Anger Scale (TMAS).Analysis of the data involved both descriptive and inferential statistics including means, standard deviations, pearson's correlation coefficient, and regression analysis. The results revealed that self-oriented and socially prescribed perfectionism were positively associated with anger dimensions, and negatively associated with anger control dimensions. No significant correlation was found between other-oriented perfectionism and dimensions of anger and anger control.

Abstract:

To examine the relationship between perfectionism and sport achievement in a sample of athletes, 74 students (44 males, 30 females) from Faculty of Physical Education and Sport Sciences, University of Tehran, participated in this study. All participants were asked to complete Farsi version of Positive and Negative perfectionism Scale (FPANPS). To measure the sport achievement, athletes' coaches were asked to rate Sport Achievement Scale (SAS). Analysis of the data involved both descriptive and inferential statistics including means, standard deviations, analysis of variance, Pearson's correlation, and regression analysis. A simple positive and negative correlation was found between positive and negative perfectionism and sport achievement respectively. However, positive perfectionism was the only significant predicting factor for changes in sport achievement. Positive perfectionism is supposed to increase the level of sport achievement via characteristics such as realistic thinking, acceptance of personal limitations, flexibility, self-satisfaction, enhancement of self-esteem, self-confidence, as well as positive perception of social supports and evaluations.

Abstract:

The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between perfectionism and mental health in a sample of students. A correlational analysis was performed to assess the kind of association existing among two types of perfectionism including positive perfectionism and negative perfectionism with mental health subscales including psychological well-being and psychological distress. One hundred and eighty five students (92 girls, 85 boys, 8 unknown) were included in this study. All participants were asked to complete the Farsi version of the Positive and Negative Perfectionism Scale (FPANPS) and Mental Health Inventory (MHI-28). Analysis of the data involved both descriptive and inferential statistics including means, standard deviations, analysis of variance, pearson's correlation coefficient, and regression analyses. The results revealed that positive perfectionism was positively associated with psychological well-being and negatively associated with psychological distress. The results also revealed that negative perfectionism was negatively associated with psychological well-being and positively associated with psychological distress. Positive perfectionism is supposed in to influence levels of mental health through enhancement of self-esteem and self-confidence and characteristics such as realistic thinking, acceptance of personal limitations, flexibility, and satisfaction from personal performance. Conversly, negative perfectionism is supposed to decrease levels of mental health through reducing self-esteem and self-confidence, as well as characteristics such as unrealistic thinking, unacceptance of personal limitations, inflexibility, and dissatisfaction from personal performance.
