Abstract: 

The Mahalanobis Taguchi System is a diagnosis and forecasting method for multivariate data. Mahalanobis distance is a measure based on correlations between the variables and different patterns that can be identified and analyzed with respect to a base or reference group. The Mahalanobis Taguchi System is of interest because of its reported accuracy in forecasting small, correlated data sets. This is the type of data that is encountered with consumer vehicle ratings. MTS enables a reduction in dimensionality and the ability to develop a scale based on MD values. MTS identifies a set of useful variables from the complete data set with equivalent correlation and considerably less time and data. This paper presents the application of the Mahalanobis-Taguchi System and its application to identify a reduced set of useful variables in multidimensional systems.

Abstract: 

The Taguchi method is a useful technique to improve the performance of products or processes at a lower cost and in lesser time. This procedure can be categorized as the static and dynamic quality characteristics. The optimization of multiple responses has received increasing attention over the last few years in many manufacturing organizations.Several approaches dealing with multiple static quality characteristic problems have been reported in the literature. However, little attention has been made on optimizing the multiple dynamic quality characteristics.In this paper, we investigate multivariate signal response systems (Dynamic Taguchi) and propose a method based on multivariate process capability. Simulated data shows that the proposed method can increase robustness of dynamic Taguchi method. Furthermore, the proposed method is capable to find the optimal value of controllable factors in a continuous space.

Abstract: 

Research has shown when a rectangular cylinder is located near a flat plate, the flat plate skin friction coefficient changes as a function of the rectangular aspect ratio, gap height between the rectangular and flat plate, distance of rectangular from the flat plate leading edge, and speed of free stream. However, there is no comprehensive experimental study on the comparison of the results of the flat plate skin friction coefficient for all the interactions between effective variables in the presence and absence of the obstacle. On the other hand, testing all possible combinations of effective variables will not be reasonable. In this paper, maximum and minimum ratios of the flat plate skin friction coefficients with and without the rectangular cylinder were determined using robust Taguchi design. Design of experiments method was applied for decreasing the number of experiments without losing the required information in the first step. Then, experimentation was done in a wind tunnel, the maximum speed of which was 13 m/s. Finally, the flat plate skin friction coefficient was optimized using Taguchi method and Minitab software. Results showed that presence of the rectangular cylinder near the flat plate decreased the average skin friction coefficient of the flat plate for all the possible combinations of the effective variables. Additionally, maximum value of the flat plate skin friction reduction was about 40%.

Abstract: 

Backgrounds and Objectives: in recent years, mobile bed biological reactors have been used progressively for municipal and industrial wastewaters treatment. Dissented experiment is a trial that significant changes will accrue for influent variables in the process, and generally used for identification of the effective factors and optimization of the process. The scope of this study was determination of the optimized conditions for the MBBR process by using of Taguchi method.Materials and Methods: Reactor start up was done by using of the recycled activated sludge from Ahwaz wastewater treatment plant. After that and passing the acclimation period, with hydraulic residence time equal to 9 hours matched for 1000, 2000 and 3000 mg/l based on COD respectively, for optimization determination of the acclimated microbial growth, the variables change (pH, nitrogen source, chemical oxygen demand and salinity) were determined in 9 steps, and all of the results were analyzed by Qualitek -4 (w32b).Results: In this study, organic load removal based on COD was 97% and best optimized condition for MBBR were (inf. COD=1000 mg/l, pH=8, salinity=5% and the Nitrogen source=NH4CL).Conclusion: Based on our finding, we may conclude that Taguchi method is on of the appropriate procedure in determination the optimized condition for increasing removal efficiency of MBBR.

Abstract: 

Manganese steels have extensively application in industries due to good resistance to wear, high work hardening capability with high toughness and ductility. Heat treatment is the main process to obtain desired mechanical properties and microstructure in this steel. The austenitizing temperature, the austenitizing time and the rate of quenching by increasing salt content are the main factors in heat treatment. For dissolving of carbide, the austenitizing temperature and austenitizing time are very important. Quenching rate must be high for minimizing the grain boundary carbids. In this research the effects of these input parameters on the grain boundary carbide content, austenite grain size and hardness have been critically analyzed using Taguchi method. In the optimization by Taguchi approach, L9 (3)3 array, employing nine experiments, with three levels for each factor, was chosen for DOE. It has been found that the austenitizing temperature is the most important process parameter affecting the carbide content, grain size and hardness. The heat treatment produces the minimum carbide content and low grain size when the process parameters were set at their optimum values. It has been shown that heat treatment parameters set as their optimum levels can ensure significant improvement in the objectives.

Abstract: 

Chitinase production by newly isolated Serratia marcescens B4A was optimized following Taguchi’s array methods. Twenty-three bacterial isolates were screened from shrimp culture ponds in the South of Iran. A chitinase-producing bacterium was isolated based on its ability to utilize chitin as the sole carbon source. The isolate designated as B4A, was identified as Serratia marcescens based on its 16S rRNA sequence and key morphological, physiological and biochemical characteristics. The cultivation of Serratia marcescens B4A in the appropriate liquid medium resulted in production of high levels of chitinase. The malt extract and colloidal chitin represented the best nitrogen and carbon sources, respectively. Chitinase production by Serratia marcescens B4A was optimized following the Taguchi orthogonal array (OA) for the design of experiments (DOE). Statistical experimental design via the Taguchi method was applied to determine the optimal levels of physical parameters and key media components in the medium, such as temperature, pH, NaCl and chitin concentrations. The results of this study showed that temperature of 30oC, pH 7.9, NaCl 0.1% (w/v) and chitin 1% (w/v) are optimal conditions for this protocol.

Abstract: 

Optimization of the processes is one of the most important tasks today, for highly competitive industries. High cost of research and development activities has necessitated development of the experimental methods by which the factors affecting a process could be determined by performing a minimum number of experiments. These types of experimental designs have been used since 1980.Among different methods of experimental designs, the Taguchi method -because of its comprehensive nature and its ability to enable designs which are resistant to uncontrollable parameters has found wide spread applications.The Sarcheshmeh copper ore, which mainly consists of Chalcopyrite, was studied by Taguchi method. The effect of seven factors namely collectors, Z11 and R407, frothers, pine oil and A65, particle size, pH and residence time were investigated. The results showed that an increase of minimum of 5% in copper recovery could be obtained using the Taguchi type of experimental design.
