Abstract: 

Background and Aim: Image brightness heterogeneity is one of the major challenges in computer image processing that can lead to inaccurate results in image segmentation. Despite the existence of numerous segmentation methods, few studies have been conducted on the effect of brightness heterogeneity and the selection of the best color channels in segmentation. In this paper, different color spaces have been used for automatic detection of skin lesions. Methods: In this study, the LSE (Level Set evolution) segmentation method along with intensity smoothing has been used for computer recognition of skin lesions. First, the brightness heterogeneity is reduced and a more uniform image is created. Then, the proposed segmentation divides the image domain into distinct regions. This method results in more accurate recognition of skin lesions. Results: The proposed method has been tested on 200 dermoscopic images from the known PH2 dataset using different color channels. The results show that this method performs better than other methods. Accuracy of 97%, sensitivity of 98%, specificity of 99% and Dice coefficient of 92% have been obtained. Conclusion: This method has the ability to accurately isolate and diagnose lesions and can help doctors in the treatment process of skin lesions.

Abstract: 

Determining the boundaries of genera in subtribe Trigonellinae Small has been one of the most controversial taxonomic issues in this field in last 100 years. Proposing the many characters for separating these genera by various botanists can be considered as a reason for this claim. Characters of the flower parts as well as other vegetative traits have been used extensively. Here on the basis of 5 qualitative and 19 quantitative flower characters we separated Trigonella species (especially perennial section Ellipticae (Boiss. ) Sirj. ) from other genera of this subtribe and showed the results in dendrogram and scatter plot. Placement of the Medicagoid species of section Bucerates (Boiss. ) Sirj. and Medicago L. in one branch and presence of Melilotus indicus (L. ) All. along with other Trigonella species (except section Ellipticae as a distinct branch) are the main results of this investigation.

Abstract: 

In his book ‘, Stone Tools in Human evolution, Behavioural Differences among Technological Primates’, , John Shea focuses on a new framework for analyzing stone tools to answer questions related to the evolution of human behavior. Although stone tools have great potential for understanding human evolution, the traditional archaeological approaches in analysis, biased our understanding on human evolution through them. Shea emphasizes that archaeologists must change their traditional approach and find new ways to study human evolution and behavior based on stone tools. This novel method will bring together palaeoanthropologists, palaeogeneticists and archaeologists and lead to a better understanding of the human behavior and evolution. The present paper tries to evaluate this new approach and see how close it is to achieve this goal. Reviewing the book shows that there is still a long way to go to understand human behavior and evolution through the study of stone tools. The book ends with many open questions, leaving readers wondering whether the author was able to tackle the traditional archaeological approach which Shea himself has been critical of throughout the book.
