MULTIVARIATE REGRESSION MODELS FOR PREDICTING SEDIMENT YIELD OF THE NORTHERN WATERSHEDS IN THE GREAT KHORASAN PROVINCE

Abstract

 Sediment load-discharge data of hydrometric stations in the north of GREAT KHORASAN PROVINCE were studied. Twenty nine stations were selected and the mean annual sediment yield was computed using sediment rating curves. The total annual sediment yield for these catchments (61.5 to 16800 km2) varied between 4.8 to 19500 M ton/year and the specific sediment yield varied between 62 to about 4000 ton/year/km2. Due to large variations in the total and specific sediment yield, 29 selected catchments were divided in two groups: 17 large catchments (area>500 km2) and 12 smaller ones (area<300 km2). Various characteristics of the catchments such as geomorphology, climate, hydrology, land cover and geology were analyzed to describe the reasons behind the sediment yield variations. Multivariate REGRESSION MODELS between independent variables and different forms of sediment yield were developed. The results showed that after classifying the catchments into 2 groups (large and small), R2 and the adequacy of specific SEDIMENT YIELD PREDICTION models were highly increased. Also, the results showed that R2 for total SEDIMENT YIELD PREDICTION models were higher than that of specific SEDIMENT YIELD PREDICTION models. Finally, the best model for each class and form (total/ specific yield) were selected. The model including mean elevation, mean slope, mean annual discharge, mean precipitation and maximum daily discharge with return period of 2 years was selected as the best model to predict the total annual sediment yield of the 12 small catchments (R2 =0.85, ME=0.79).
