Title

NATURAL RECOVERY OF SOME SOIL MICROMORPHOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF SKID TRAILS FOR TWENTY YEARS PERIOD (CASE STUDY: ASALEM FOREST, GUILAN PROVINCE)

Abstract

Using modern machinery for logging transfer considerable pressure to the soil which causes changes and damages to soil structure. This inturn has long- term effect on micromorphological properties including size and type of soil poresis. This research was conducted to examine the recovery of SKID TRAILS soil during twenty years period. The treatments included three time period (1, 10 and 20 years), two slope classes (>20% and <20%) and two traffic levels (high and low). The plots of 12×5 m2 dimensions were considered and in each sample plot undisturbed samples were taken from SKID TRAILS and control. Soil thin sections were prepared from these samples. Soil thin sections were studied using POLARIZED MICROSCOPE. The total porosity of soil, area and diameter of voids were determined by Image Tool software. Results showed that 20 years after skidding operation the micromorphological properties of compacted soil have not recovered yet and are significantly different compared to control and for a complete recovery they need more time. Slope and traffic intensity have important effect on recovery of this properties and most disturbance to soil is observed in SKID TRAILS with slope >20% and high traffic intensity.
