Abstract

Borkhar hydrologic unit is part of Marghab sub-basin in Gavkhoni Basin (Zayandeh roud) The area of this unit is 378,605 ha and a number of cities including Isfahan, Khomeini Shahr, Kborasgan, Shahin Shahr, and some villages such as Dolat Abad, Ghohab, and Khorzogh.Attractive aspects of urban life in Isfahan have increased immigration of the surrounding rural areas to this and other cities, thereby intensifying conversion of agricultural lands to other uses. This conversion is of great ecological, economical, and social significance .Therefore, we attempted to study the changes in land use of this area during the last 75 years. For this purpose, we used aerial photographs, old documents, and satellite images to evaluate the changes in the boundaries of Borkhar hydrologic unit. Our study shows that, since 1920's, some 34,000 ha of prime agricultural lands have been taken out of agricultural use and production. Considering similar changes in the neighboring sub basins, the total converted area amounts to nearly 51,000 ha. It is estimated that the production potential of this land for the three main crops of the area, namely, wheat, barley, and rice, would amount to about 650 thousand tons of grain per year.
