MODELING OF LAND PRODUCTION POTENTIAL FOR IRRIGATED AND RAINFED WINTER WHEAT IN MIANAB AREA, SHOOSHTAR, KHUZESTAN PROVINCE, IRAN

Abstract

 The study area is about 36,205 hectares and is located in minabe area, shoshtar, kuzestan province, between 31°35¢ to 32° north latitude and 48° 50¢ to 49° east longitude.Data of the nearest synoptic station to the study area shows that the climatic type is semi-deserted. The maximum daily air temperature is 46.7 °C in June and the minimum daily air temperature is 7.1°C in December. The anrmal rainfall is about 325 mm. The growing period in area for rainted cultivation starts in December 4, and ends in March 10, which is about 96 days.The aim of this research was to elaborate an approach for the prediction of the land production potential for irrigated and rainfed winter wheat, taking into account the environmental conditions in the study area. The methodology considers different hierarchically ordered production situations.In the first hierarchically production situation, the radiation thermal production potential (RPP) or the irrigated yield for wheat has been calculated. In the second hierarchical production situation, the climatic production potential (CPP), considering the influence of moisture availability has been calculated. In the third hierarchically production potential situation, land production potential (LPP) for phases of family has been calculated considering soil indices.The result of the first hierarchically production situation showed that potential irrigated yield based on Sys method is 6457 kg/ha and with APT2 method is 8021kg/ha. The result of the second hierarchical production situation showed that climatic production potential or rainfed production potential is 1220kg/ha with the Sys method and 1770kg/ha with the APT method. This reduction is due to shortage of rainfall during mid and late season stage of growing cycle. The result of the third hierarchically production potential situation showed land production potential for rainfed wheat ranged from 150 to 1111 kg/ha due to shortage of rainfall, and limitations imposed by lime, drainage, salinity and alkalinity. The present land production potential for irrigated wheat is from 652 to 4836 kg/ha with the Sys method and from 933 to 6023 kg/ha with the APT method.The future land production potential after land improvement such as, drainage and leaching, is estimated from 3229 to 5101kg/ha with the Sys method and 4849to 6352 kg/ha with APT method. Comparison of the predicted yield (LPP) with the observed yield under high level of management in the some map units showed close correlation with r2 = 0.78. Our results showed that the simulated production environment closely resembled the situation in which the farmer actually operated. These differences observed between predicted and observed yields are most probably the result of special resolution.
