Abstract

 CO2 concentration is one of the limiting factors in producing cut flowers and vegetable in greenhouses. Beacuse of the high intensity of sunlight in the country (with an average of 120,000 Lux), the CO2 concentration in greenhouse atmosphere reduces, especially in cold seasons beacuse the air ventilation is less. This research was done to study the interaction between CO2 enrichment, nitrogen and iron fertilization on the quality and quantity of carnations (Dianthus crayophyllus L.) during 1995-99 in Theran. In the first year of experiment, an optimum nutritional condition was developed according to the literature and was used as the control condition for setting of the control treatment. This experiment had a completely randomized design with 5 replications and experimental treatments were 2 levels of CO2 (C1=340 and C2=1000 ppm VN) and 2 levels of nitrogen (N1= according to balanced fertilization and N2= 1 meq/L ammonium and 2 meq/L nitrate) and 2 levels of iron chelate (F1= balanced fertilization and F2= 0.1 gr Fe-EDDHA per pot). Height of flower stem, stem diameter, number of flowers per plant, flower diameter, calyx diameter, flower quality, vase life, dry weight, and amount of absorbed Fe and N by vegetative tissue were measured. Treatments were compared using statistical methods. Average of three years experimental results showed that number of flower per plants in C2+N2 treatment increased 60%. In C2+N2+F2 treatment measured characters were increased as follow: flower vase life about 55%, dry weight about 38% and flower stem height about 5.81%. Flower quality increased by 50% in C2+N2 treatment. Flower diameter did not change in any treatment. F2 treatments showed a toxic effect caused by interaction of two iron chelating agents in blank and F2.
