CREATING A SPERM BANK FROM STURGEON BROOD STOCKS IN THE SOUTH CASPIAN SEA

Abstract

In this study creating of a sperm bank from Caspian Sea sturgeons was considered. Sperm samples were chosen from 18 good quality samples of different sturgeon male spawners with motility over 70% during 2006-2007 breeding seasons. Extender consisted of 118 mM Tris, 23.4 mM sucrose and 15% DMSO. Diluted samples were transferred into 0.5 ml straws by automatic filling apparatus. 1290 ml frozen sperm from spawner was held in liquid nitrogen after being frozen through several step cryopreservation. Sperm quality and quantity from Sefidrud Persian sturgeon showed better characteristics in comparison with nonriverine spawners. Also Stellate sturgeon showed better resistance to cryopreservation conditions in comparison with Persian sturgeon sperm samples. Stellate and Persian sturgeons showed 14.3% and 43.7% fertilization rate with frozen-thawed spermatozoa (2 years old and 5 years old) respectively.
