Title

THE INVESTIGATION OF PHYCOBILIPROTEINS IN HETEROCYSTOUS CYANOBACTERIA SEROVARS ISOLATED FROM PADDY FIELDS OF EASTERN MAZANDARAN

Pages

  11-23

Abstract

Cyanobacteria are photosynthetic prokaryotes which are exceptionally well adapted to a wide array of environmental conditions. They have received considerable attention as a rich source of phycobiliproteins - industrially and pharmacologically important natural products. Various species of CYANOBACTERIA utilize different combinations of chromophores and Phycobiliproteins to optimize their light harvesting capabilities for photosynthesis. The aim of this research was to investigate phycobiliproteins in heterocystous CYANOBACTERIA isolated from PADDY FIELDs in eastern part of Mazandran. After collecting soil samples, CYANOBACTERIA cultures were cultivated on a typical BG110. In addition to purification process, there were repeated sub-culturing on solidified and liquid medium then the strains were characterized morphologically. Results indicated that according to adaptation in accessible light condition, different species of CYANOBACTERIA were diversified in the amount of phycobiliprotein to optimize their light harvesting process in photosynthesis. Moreover, significant difference in amount of PHYCOCYANIN, ALLOPHYCOCYANIN and phycoerythrin was observed in various species. Maximum levels of these protein compounds in belonged to Lyngbya diguetii, Phormidium minnesotense in that order.
