Title

ESTIMATION OF ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY AND TOTAL PHENOLIC CONTENT OF DIFFERENT PARTS OF SEEDS FROM FOUR SUNFLOWER (HELIANTHUS ANNUS L.) GENOTYPES

Pages

  1-10

Abstract

In the present study we have investigated the TOTAL PHENOLIC CONTENT, flavonoid content, and ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY in different part of seed (kernel and SHELL) from four SUNFLOWER genotypes. The ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY of extracts was examined by Reducing Power, Nitric oxide radical inhibition, and DPPH radical scavenging assays. The results showed that the levels of total phenolic and flavonoid contents changed depending on different parts of seeds and genotypes. So that, total phenolic and flavonoid contents in KERNEL were 7.6 and 3.8 times higher than those in SHELL. ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY of KERNEL extract was significantly higher than SHELL, and the higher ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY of KERNEL extract can be attributed to higher total phenolic and flavonoid contents. Overall, the results indicated that the S1 genotype showed the highest TOTAL PHENOLIC CONTENT and ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY among all genotypes. In KERNEL extracts, positive correlation coefficient was observed between TOTAL PHENOLIC CONTENT and FRAP, Nitric oxide radical inhibition, and DPPH assays. Therefore, the results suggest that KERNEL SUNFLOWER seeds can be used as potent natural antioxidants in diets.
