Abstract

 The study area (Ibrahimabad plain) is a part of Miankouh catchment. It is within 31o 13', 31o 45' North latitude and 54o 13', 54o 25' East longitude. The main geomorphological units in the area are as follows:Mountains and ridges surrounding the plain, alluvial fans, alluvial plain, flood plains and eolian deposits. The study area is in relatively cold arid zone. The regime of precipitation is Mediterranean; mean annual precipitation is about 113.8 mm. This plain is known as syncline and consists of an unconfined AQUIFER in quaternary sediments. The plain is surrounded by mountains consisting of Jurassic granite and Cretaceous limestone and shales. Darrah Zanjir shale formation is considered to be the bed rock of the AQUIFER. The main groundwater outlet of the AQUIFER is the QANAT system. The water level contour map is provided based on measured water level in the mother-wells of QANATs during field work (the only available data). The E.C. contour map based on E.C. measurements during field work. The E.C. of GROUND WATER changes from 316 mohs/cm in the South east corner of the plain to more than 800 micro mohs/cm in the North West corner where shales of Darrahzanjir formation are exposed. The Modflow program was used for simulation of GROUND WATER flow system and the evaluation of the effect of ARTIFICIAL RECHARGE reservoirs.Main conclusion is that 42 percent of the mean inflow is captured by the QANAT systems and two drinking wells. The remaining 58 percent spills naturaly over the Mehriz AQUIFER through the two gates in the conglomerate barrier. The obvious conclusion is that the construction of dams in Ibrahimabad plain increased the discharge around one percent, much less than was expected.
