Title

EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF PATHOGENIC EFFECTS OF POX VIRUS ISOLATED FROM CANARY IN BUDGERIGARS

Pages

  23-30

Abstract

CANARY pox is one of the acute diseases of this bird which causes 100 percent morbidity and 80 to 100 percent mortality. It has two major different forms: coetaneous and mucosal. This disease is host specific for CANARY, but there have been some reports of outbreaks in BUDGERIGARs, house sparrows and small parakeets. In one vaccinated CANARY flock after one year, again the illness and mortality occurred. Bacterial, fungal cultures and viral isolation from sick and dead birds were done. In the culture only one staphylococcus spp and one yeast were isolated. Based on pox virus isolation by embryonating eggs, we concluded that it was pox disease. In order to control the disease in the flock, revaccination was recommended. After about three weeks the signs of the disease were completely removed and mortality was stopped. After six months, based on the report of the flock owner the birds were fine and there was no problem. In order to study the experimental infection in BUDGERIGARs, 10 BUDGERIGARs and 10 canaries were inoculated with 105 ElD50 viral particles by wing web method. Within the following 3 weeks all birds were checked daily. All of the canaries had local hyperplasia and inflammation while BUDGERIGARs did not show local or general response and all of them were healthy. Therefore lack of multiplying and pathogenic effects of the isolated CANARY pox virus in BUDGERIGAR was proved.
