Abstract

Sewage sludge application on farmland as fertilizer is a common practice in many countries. SEWAGE SLUDGE is rich in organic matter as well as macro and micronutrients. However, high concentration of heavy metals in sludge may cause pollution of soil and groundwater resources. The objectives of this study were to determine As movement and WHEAT uptake of As in a 6-year SEWAGE SLUDGE amended calcareous soil. SEWAGE SLUDGE was applied at (0, 25, 50 and 100 t/ha) to the soil. Soil samples were collected at five depths and Plant samples were also collected. Soil analysis indicated that the SEWAGE SLUDGE increased As concentration in soil significantly. The greatest amount of total concentration of As was observed at 0-20 cm depth and decreased significantly with depth. Concentration of As in soils in 6 (100) t/ha treatment was higher than critical levels but the concentration was normal in the plant. Results show that effect and duration was depended on the rate of sludge used and type of soil and plant.
