SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION AND VOLUME OF DEAD TREES IN FAGUS ORIENTALIS STANDS OF IRAN (CASE STUDY: GORAZBON DISTRICT OF KHEYRUD FOREST)

Abstract

 The aim of this study is to analyze the spatial pattern, volume and DECAY STAGES of dead woods in BEECH FORESTs, Northern Iran. The current research was carried out in compartment 319, Gorazbon District, Khayroud Forests dominated by Fagus orientalis in which no management practices have been done before this inventory. Dead trees characteristics including species, DBH and height of SNAGS and mid-trunk diameter, length and decay grade of downed trees were recorded. The coordinates of all dead trees (snags and downed) were recorded using azimuth-distance method by laser device. The results showed that the volume of dead trees in study area is 34.93 m3/ha that the volume of SNAGS and DOWNED DEAD TREES is 6.622 and 28.835 m3/ha respectively. Decay class I has accounted for most of the volume of dead trees (44%). The spatial pattern of dead trees was determined as clustered, using K-RIPLEY FUNCTION.
