THE EFFECT OF SEED SIZE ON GROWTH OF THREE CULTIVARS OF SOYBEAN (GLYCINE MAX L.) IN GORGAN

Abstract

 In order to study the effect of SEED SIZE on grow and yield components of three CULTIVARs of SOYBEAN (Glycine max. L), an experiment was carried out as factorial experiment based on a randomized complete block design with four replications at the Islamic Azad University of Gorgan in 2011. Two factors were “cultivar” and “SEED SIZE”. The first factor consisted of three SOYBEAN CULTIVARs (Sahar, Williams and Katul) and the second factor was comprised of three levels of SEED SIZE, i.e. “Small”, “Medium” and “large”. Analysis of variance showed the plant height, the number of lateral branches, crop grow rate, leaf area index, net absorption rate, economical yield and biological yield were significantly affected by factors (SEED SIZE and SOYBEAN CULTIVAR). “Katul” CULTIVAR had the highest plant height, crop grow rate and leaf area index, and “Sahar” CULTIVAR had the highest number of lateral branches, and “ Williams” CULTIVAR had the highest economical yield, biological yield and net absorption rate. Sahar by “large SEED SIZE” interaction and Williams by “large SEED SIZE” had the highest effect on economical yield whereas “Katul” CULTIVAR by “large SEED SIZE” had the highest effects on crop grow rate, leaf area index and net absorption rate.
