THE EFFECT OF ASCORBIC ACID ON GERMINATION CHARACTERISTICS AND BIOCHEMICAL CHANGES OF SORGHUM SEEDS UNDER SALINITY STRESS

Abstract

 Seed priming improves some properties of seed and seedling and the next plants. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of ASCORBIC ACID on seedling growth and changes of biochemically of SORGHUM seeds under SALINITY STRESS. The first factor was priming with ASCORBIC ACID (zero and 100 ppm and unprimed or control) and secondary factor was combinations three levels of salinity (0, -7 and -14 bar). The results showed that the priming effects by ASCORBIC ACID on germination percentage, germination rate, normal seedling percentage, dry weight, mean time to germination and energy of germination were significant. Results showed that, the highest germination percentage, germination rate, normal seedling percentage, dry weight, energy of germination and the minimum mean time to germination were attained from ASCORBIC ACID 100 ppm. Also, seed priming increases enzyme activity.
