Title

THE STUDY ON THE EFFECT OF ULTRASONIC WAVES ON SEED GERMINATION IN MYRTUS COMMUNIS L

Pages

  21-31

Abstract

Myrtle (Myrtus communis L.), belonging to Myrtaceae, is a plant whose seed GERMINATION requires the loss of seed dormancy. The research was conducted in vitro to evaluate the effect of ultrasonic waves and chilling on such traits as seed GERMINATION, GERMINATION percentage, GERMINATION rate, RADICAL length, PLUMULE length, RADICAL dry weight, and PLUMULE dry weight in seeds of MYRTLE medicinal plant. The experiment was conducted in the form of randomized complete blocks design (RCBD) with four replications and seven treatments. The treatments included seed chilling for two months, absence of chilling and lack of using waves (as the control group). Moreover, the seeds were exposed to 42 kHz ultrasonic waves in five different times (30, 60, 120, 180 and 240 seconds). Results showed that ultrasonic waves had the maximum effect on GERMINATION and other traits. There was no significant difference between the effects of various time levels of waves on the traits (Duncan 5%). For its loss of seed dormancy, chilling was better than the control (lack of using waves and absence of chilling). Considering the minimum cost and time, the 30-second treatment can be introduced as the best one for the loss of seed dormancy in this medicinal plant.
