Abstract

This experiment was carried out in order to study effect of DROUGHT STRESS on compatible osmolyte accumulation in SESAME genotype in factorial arrangement on the basis of randomized complete block design with three replication in Jiroft and Kahnouj Agricultural Research Center during summer season of year 2007. The first factor was DROUGHT STRESS at different growth stages in five levels: 1- no irrigation from the 6-4 leaf stage up to flower initiation, 2 - no irrigation from the 4-6 leaf stage to the full flowering, 3 - no irrigation from flowering until the end of the growing season, 4 - full irrigation at all stages of plant growth based on 100 mm evaporation from Class A pan. The second factor was including drought tolerance SESAME genotype in two levels: JL13 line and Jiroft local variety. During the growth stages some physiological characteristics, such as leaf PROLINE and TOTAL SUGARS content, the uptake of POTASSIUM, zinc and calcium ions were measured.  The results showed that the genotype effect on leaf PROLINE and TOTAL SUGARS content and effect of DROUGHT STRESS at different growth stages on leaf PROLINE and TOTAL SUGARS content, the uptake of POTASSIUM and zinc ions were significant. Also the interaction of DROUGHT STRESS and genotype on leaf TOTAL SUGARS content was significant.  Calcium uptake rate were not affected by DROUGHT STRESS treatments.  DROUGHT STRESS at different growth stages increased accumulation of PROLINE, TOTAL SUGARS, POTASSIUM and zinc ions in leaves. Accumulation of PROLINE, TOTAL SUGARS, POTASSIUM and zinc ions in leaves increased with increasing the severity of DROUGHT STRESS, while no effect on calcium absorption. Proilne and tatal sugar accumulation under stress condition in JL-13 line was higher than Jiroft local variety.
