Title

The Efficiency of Daylight Metrics in Estimating Lighting Sufficiency in Space, based on Users’ Evaluation: The Case of Educational spaces in Tehran Universities

Abstract

The presence of adequate amount of light in space allows users to get on with his or her activities without eye fatigue caused by frequent adaptations with light levels. With the help of Simulation tools, and taking advantage of evaluation indices resulted from field studies, experts today are able to estimate and calculate lighting conditions, as well as user satisfaction toward the visual environment. However, more research needs to be done on how to interpret results to best correspond with the user’ s perceptions. The present research aims to prioritize Daylight performance metric in terms of their correspondence with users’ perception, and define their acceptability thresholds. In order to do so, a comparison was made between simulated Daylight metrics such as Horizontal Illuminance (E), Daylight Factor (DF), Useful Daylight Illuminance (UDI) and Spatial Daylight Autonomy (sDA) and daylit areas defined by drawings of 386 architecture students in 20 design studios in Tehran universities. According to the results, users’ perception considers a horizontal Illuminance of 125 Lux as the threshold between non-daylit and partially daylit areas, and 350 between partially daylit and fully-daylit areas. Of static metrics, DF>2%, and of climate-based dynamic metrics the ‘ fully daylit areas determined by sDA considering 300 Lux as the lowest threshold were found to correspond most with users’ evaluation.
