Title

Pages

  235-244

Abstract

There is an ongoing debate among thinkers in the fields of architecture and other related disciplines about the nature of architecture. This article investigates the meanings of the term “ architecture. ” The term has different meanings in contemporary Persian language and many other languages, but it is not clear which meanings are primary/explicit and which meanings are secondary/implicit. In this article, different meanings of the word “ architecture” are studied and it is tried to distinguish between its primary/explicit and secondary/implicit meanings. To do that, we rely on the doctrines and methods provided by Alfā z in the principles of Islamic jurisprudence. According to this research, the term “ architecture” refers to three main meanings in Persian: 1) A category of human knowledge or characteristics of that knowledge; 2) A category of human actions or characteristics of those actions; 3) A building or building complex or their visual characteristics. The first and second meanings are the main and explicit meanings of the term and the third category denotes its secondary/implicit meaning. Thematic analysis is used as the research method and logical reasoning as the research strategy. This article is organized into four main chapters: 1) Introduction; 2) The Principles of Jurisprudence and Alfā z; 3. Meanings of the Term “ Architecture; ” and 4. Results.
