Title

BIOLOGICAL CONTROL OF COMMON ROOT ROT OF WHEAT BY ANTAGONISTIC BACTERIA ISOLATED FROM WHEAT RHIZOSPHERE

Pages

  383-402

Abstract

In this survey, antagonistic effect of 280 strains of bacteria from WHEAT RHIZOSPHERE in Markazi province was studied to control WHEAT COMMON ROOT ROT caused by BIPOLARIS SOROKINIANA. Antagonistic effect of bacterial strains was evaluated on the basis of their inhibitory zone of fungal growth. Results showed a total of 40% of the strains tested exhibited antagonistic effect. From these strains, seven strains were selected for further studies. On the basis of biochemical, physiological and morphological tests the strains were identified as Bacillus subtilis (GI, GH2), B. Pllmilus (SH4, KH7), Bacillus sp. (H3), and Pseudomonas fluorescens bv. III (AS). In laboratory tests, all strains inhibited mycelial growth of B. sorokiniana isolates with production of volatile and non-volatile metabolites.P. flollrescens AS inhibited spores germination of Geotrichm candidum, by siderophore production. All antagonists grew at 1, 10, 50 and 100 ppm of triadimenol and difenoconazole. In greenhouse experiments, selected antagonists were used as seed dressing and soil drenching. In seed dressing method, B.sllbtilis GH2 and P.fluorescens bv. III AS had the highest effect on disease severity reduction and in increasing plant height, shoot and root dry weights, in the presence of the pathogen. In soil drenching method B. subtilis GH2 and B. pumilus KH7 showed better results. These strains had also the most promoting effect on plant height and shoot and root dry weights of WHEAT seedlings in the absence of the pathogen.
