Abstract

Atriplex canecens has been introduced to some rangelands of Iran for forage production, soil conservation and combating desertification. Infusion of exotic plants in natural lands can be caused some changes in seedling sites. This investigation is an endeavor to diagnose and measurement of probable changes from ecological viewpoint. To achieve objectives, planted and adjacent non planted areas were compared in terms of VEGETATION COVER and soil. Atriplex in planted areas has more than 10 years old. Three sites were chosen in KHORASAN province. Vegetation parameters (density, canopy cover and yield) and soil characteristics (texture, pH, EC, soluble sodium, organic matter percentage and phosphorus) between planted area and adjacent non-planted area was compared in each region. The results showed that density and production of dominant species were significantly decreased in planted areas. Also canopy cover was decreased in two sites. Soil pH was increased in depth of 15-30cm. EC and soluble sodium was increased in both depths in all sites. Organic matter was significantly increased in one of the region. But the trend variation of phosphorus was not similar in different regions. It seems that Atriplex canescens had a negative effect on vegetative and soil characteristics. It has changed the salinity of soil surface and caused disappearance of native dominated species
