INVESTIGATION OF SELF-HEATING OF WOOD RAW MATERIAL AND FOREST PRODUCTS

Abstract

 In this research, SELF-HEATING mechanism of wood raw materials and some of the forest products was studied. Consumption of oxygen inside the material will lead to concentration gradient which in turn causes diffusion of oxygen from the ambient air inside the pile. Diffusion is low, but over the long periods of SELF-HEATING the amounts of diffusion oxygen add up, and heat released by reaction with oxygen is high. The released heat produces a temperature gradient under which the material transfers heat out into the surroundings by means of conduction and, in moist material of diffusing vapor. When the heat flux of diffusion oxygen exceeds heat loss, SELF-HEATING commences. The products self-heat to a stable temperature, with generated heat equaling transferred heat. To find this stable temperature, the three types of diffusing oxygen flux, HEAT CONDUCTION and VAPOR DIFFUSION are assessed and compared for various temperatures. In addition, experimental measurements showed that in open piles of moist CHIPS and SAWDUST, according to microclimate and pile size, temperatures generally hover near 65 C or a little more.
