Title

YIELD POTENTIAL OF LENTIL GENOTYPES (LENS CULINARIS MEDIK) UNDER WINTER (INTEZERI) AND SPRING SOWING DATES

Pages

  403-412

Abstract

In order to evaluate yield and yield components of LENTIL GENOTYPES in winter and spring SOWING DATEs, five GENOTYPES with high cold hardiness and two common varieties (Ziba & Mardom) were sown in three different dates i.e. 6 December (winter), 6 March (early spring) and 6 April (normal spring). A 3x7 factorial experiment was performed in a complete randomized block design with four replications at Research Farm of Faculty of Agriculture, TehranUniversity,Karaj (Iran) during2003-2004.Traits studied were grainyield, biological yield, harvest index, phonological and morphological traits. Analysis of variance showed that the effect of SOWING DATEs on GRAIN YIELD, biological yield, number of pod per plant, average number of grain per pod and 1000 seed weight (p<0.01) as well as harvest index (p<0.05)were significant. Winter SOWING DATE significantly increased grain and biological yield, harvest index, number of pods per plant and number of grains per pod. These traits significantly differed among GENOTYPES (p<0.01). Genotype No.2 was superior in most of the traits, except for biological yield. Some morphological traits such as plant height, the lowest pod height from ground level and secondary branches were significantly influenced by SOWING DATE (p<0.01) with WINTER SOWING observed to have increased them. These traits significantly differed by genotype as well. Winter SOWING DATE increased the length of pod filling period. Effects of GENOTYPES on pod filling period were significant (p<0.01). Correlation analysis indicated a positive relationship between GRAIN YIELD and such yield components as number of pods per plant, and number of grains per pod. GRAIN YIELD indicated a negative correlation with 1000 seed weight. Most other traits had a significant and positive correlation with GRAIN YIELD. From genotype number 2 with a SOWING DATE of December 6th. The greatest GRAIN YIELD was obtained.
