Abstract

In this investigation, the effect of NITROGEN (N) and harvesting time on essential OIL and THYMOL content of thymus vulgaris L was conducted at the Research Station of Tarbiat Modarress University. The experiment was carried out in a randomized complete blocks design with a 4x2 factorial experiment, N (at four levels: 0, 50, 100 and 150kg/ha) and harvesting time (at two levels: at full flowering & fruit set stages). Extraction of essential OIL and measurement of THYMOL was carried out by Clevenger and Gass - Chromatography, respectively. Results showed that NITROGEN rates had no significant effect on essential OIL and THYMOL content but it increased herb yield. Therefore, essential OIL and THYMOL yield increased as well. The essential OIL content during harvesting at fruit set stage was higher that full flowering stage but harvesting time had no significant effect on THYMOL content. In this research, 100kg/ha N and harvesting at fruit set stage were considered to be the best obtaining maximum yield of herb, essential OIL and THYMOL.
