  58-67

Abstract

Leishmania is the antumis the principal agent of VISCERAL LEISHMANIASIS (Kala-azar) in all areas of IRAN. The disease is endemic in Fars, Ardabil, East Azerbaijan and Bushehr provinces and is sporadic in other parts of IRAN. The main animal reservoir host of kala-azar is the canidae, particularly domestic DOG. To determine VISCERAL LEISHMANIASIS in shepherd DOGs in JAHROM, south area of Fars province, a total of 431 sera were collected randomly. The study was descriptive and cross-sectional. Sera were collected from 106 different points of JAHROM district during summer 2004. All sera were tested by direct AGGLUTINATION test (DAT) .The results showed that 33 out of 431 (7.6%) of collected sera were positive with titres of 1:40 and above ( Titres of 5 DOGs out of 33 were 1:40 and 20 DOGs out of 33 were 1:80 and the rest were 1:160 and above). Only in one DOG with a titre of 1:20480, skin lesions, weakness and cachexia were found. In 10 DOGs, only cachexia and weakness were seen and in others there were no signs on infection. The distribution of infection in various regions of JAHROM district except western region (30%) ranged between 5% to 10%. No significant relationship was found between gender and age with infected DOGs. The results are similar to other studies carried out by other researchers, and showed that canine VISCERAL LEISHMANIASIS in JAHROM has decreased during the last 10 years.
