Title

A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF ALLOMETRIC GROWTH RATE OF SPINAL CORD IN RELATION TO THE VERTEBRAL COLUMN IN CHICK AND ADULT MALE OSTRICH (STRUTHIO CAMELUS)

Abstract

The changes of total and regional ALLOMETRIC GROWTH RATE of the SPINAL CORD to the VERTEBRAL COLUMn in various regions of chick and adult male OSTRICH were studied. In this study, two groups of male OSTRICH including four chicks (1 month) and four adults (18 months) were used. The specimens were fixed in 10% buffered formalin. In both groups VERTEBRAL COLUMn along with SPINAL CORD were dissected (without any damage) and all segments of the SPINAL CORD were identified. The total and regional length of the VERTEBRAL COLUMn and the SPINAL CORD were precisely measured. The results revealed that in OSTRICH the VERTEBRAL COLUMn formula is C18 T9 L8 S12 Co8.In chick OSTRICH, the maximum length of the VERTEBRAL COLUMn and the SPINAL CORD were found to be in the cervical region then thoracic, sacral, lumbar and the coccygeal regions respectively. In adult OSTRICH, the maximum length of the VERTEBRAL COLUMn and the SPINAL CORD were observed in the cervical region then thoracic, sacral, coccygeal and the lumbar regions respectively. Maximum ALLOMETRIC GROWTH RATE in both groups was in the sacral region and the minimum rate in both groups after pygostyle was in the lumbar region.
