Background: Varicocele occurs in approximately 15% to 20% of the male population and it is the most common cause of poor semen. It has been demonstrated that patients with varicocele have poor chromatin packing, DNA damage and nuclear anomalies than the healthy men. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate sperm chromatin integrity and semen parameter in patients after nonmicrosurgical subinguinal varicocelectomy. Methods: This study evaluated semen parameters and sperm DNA integrity before and 4 month after nonmicrosurgical subinguinal varicocelectomy from 30 men with varicocele in center of infertility in Ahvaz Jundishapour University of Medical Sciences. Parameters of semen were evaluated with WHO criteria and sperm DNA integrity was analysed by aniline blue and toluidine blue. The slides were checked by light microscopy and to determine the percentage of mature or immature spermatozoa.200 spermatozoa were counted in each slide. Results: The percentage of positive aniline blue (AB+) and toluidine blue (TB+) significantly decreased following varicocelectomy (59.98% versus 57.08%, P=0.047 for TB+and 57.08%5 versus 43.91%, P=0.039 for AB+). Morphology, count and motility of sperm showed improving after varicocelectomy but motility of sperm was not considered statistically significant. Conclusion: This study suggests that nonmicrosurgical subinguinal varicocelectomy can improve human sperm DNA integrity and semen parameters in men with varicocele.

Background: Liver plays an important role in normal function of the body. Liver diseases are the most common diseases in Iran and other countries, nearly3 to 5percent of the population of Iran suffer from it. Liver protective agents are under intensive investigations and among them are the compounds that have natural origin and rich in antioxidant capacity. In this study, protective effect of date (Phoenix dactylifera) seed extract on liver hepatocytes of rat has been evaluated. Previously, it was shown that this extract could have antiinflammatory, anti-tumor and peptic ulcer protective effects. Methods: For this study instead of the negative control group (receiving carbon tetrachloride and carrying extract) and control (receiving carrier), groups 100, 500, 1000 and 2000 mg/kg of date seed methanol extract was evaluated.and orally taken twice daily for four consecutive day to Rat and noon the fourth day exposed to 0.5 ml/kg carbon tetrachloride intraperitoneally, Blood was collected on fifth morning and activities of AST (SGOT) and ALT (SGPT) enzymes were determined. Results: Evaluation of serum concentration showed that the mean concentration serum AST in negative control group, control and control groups with doses 100, 500, 1000 and 2000 mg/kg of extract respectively 780, 140, 730, 390, 235 and 160 IU/ml, and for ALT respectively, 680, 110, 530, 360, 195 and is 160 IU/ml.Conclusion: Evaluation of results showed that doses of 1000 and 2000 mg/kg date seed extract in comparison with negative control group, protective effect against toxicity caused by carbon tetrachlorideis acceptable. And this could be due to antioxidant's effects of date seed that can inhibit radicals created bycarbon tetrachloride.

Abstract:

Background: Electrospinning is an old technique established for the preparation of submicron polymeric fibers. Recently, electrospun nanofibers have shown several medical and pharmaceutical advantages due to their extremely small diameter and high porosity. They can imitate the extra cellular matrix (ECM), utilized as wound healing and protective dressing. Chitosan is one of the important biomaterials which has shown wound healing and antimicrobial properties. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of solution properties of chitosan such as concentration, viscosity on nanofiber formation and morphology. Methods: Chitosan solutions (2 and 3% w/v), with three different molecular weights prepared in 2% acetic acid. The solutions mixed with a 10% w/v polyvinyl alcohol solution (1: 1 ratio) and analyzed for their viscosity. Nanofibers prepared with electrospinning technique and the morphology and diameter of resulting nanofibers were tested by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and image analysis. Possible physicochemical interactions between PVA and chitosan also evaluated by FTIR and DSC analysis. Results: The results showed that the PVA solution has the highest viscosity and addition of chitosan decreases its viscosity. Eelectrospinning of chitosan solution by itself was impossible but addition of PVA could facilitate the process. SEM analysis revealed that PVA solution results in smooth fibers which were comparatively large in diameter. Increasing chitosan decreased the nanofibers diameter and caused the formation of beaded structures. Conclusion: The results indicated that Chitosan with<500cp viscosity seems to produce more uniform nanofibers.

Abstract:

Knowledge of herbal medicine by the physicians and medical students is essential for patients’ consultation. Due to the increasing use of herbal medicine in obstetric and considering that according to studies almost half of the users of traditional medicine are women of reproductive age, assessing the knowledge and attitudes of midwives and midwifery students in this field is essential. This study was done in the second academic semester to determine the attitude of midwifery students of Ahvaz university of Medical Sciences about herbal medicine and its application in obstetric in 2012. The results of this study showed the interest in learning herbal medicine and a lack of academic training in this field. It was also found that a quarter of students did not know the application of herbal medicine in obstetrics. It seems that inadequate academic training and no access to a reliable source for herbal medicines can effect on the ability of midwifery students in the use of herbal medicine for treatment of patients.
